Escaping to warm weather!
Every year thousands of Canadians head down south to avoid the snow, slush and downright depressing winter climate of the north. Where does this normally take them? Well on the West coast most Canadians head to Arizona. In the central and east side of Canada the state of choice is Florida.
Now I've been going to Florida for many years now, my family actually used to own a house but when the economy tanked a number of years ago we had to sell it off. So a couple of weekends ago I decided to head back and visit some of my favourite places in Southwest Florida and it definitely brought back some memories.
Sanibel/ Captiva Island
This is one of my favourite spots in SW Florida, the water is beautiful and is an amazing place to pick up some pristine shells. Sanibel island is directly on the Gulf of Mexico and therefore receives a ton of shells as storms churn up the ocean and deposit the shells on the beach. The seafood on the island is excellent as well and you should definitely pick up a Grouper sandwich from one of the local restaurants like the Green Flash.
Ft. Myers Beach
Spring Break central. If you're looking for a Spring Break spot this is your go-to destination. With a pier a la Huntington Beach this is the place to be. With volleyball and bars surrounding the strip there is always somewhere to grab a drink and have a good time. Ended up spending the afternoon at a bar called the SOB (Smoking Oyster Bar) that served excellent Seafood and even better drinks. The rum punch had 4 different types of Rum and was a great way to start the afternoon.
Like any trip I wish it was longer but this was a nice way to escape the cold weather in Toronto and to see if I still fit into my shorts and polos (barely). Hopefully I brought some of the warm weather back to Toronto with me!
Let me know if you've ever been to SW Florida!
